Scavengers Style Research

Salamispots is an illustrator known for their extensive series of mermaid illustrations, usually created as part of the month-long Mermay drawing challenge. During the month of May, Salamispots takes daily suggestions from their followers of what aquatic creatures to render in mer-person form, illustrating them in a variety of different styles and colour schemes.

Their imaginative interpretations cleverly fuse unusual sea-life with the idea of a traditional mermaid, resulting in horrifyingly beautiful merfolk.

Due to many of their subjects being based on deep see creatures, many of Salamispots’ backgrounds are dark and moody. The stark black background contrasting with the vibrant sea creatures were a source of inspiration while working on my comic, specifically in panels where the black outline of the comic panels merged with the rest of the picture.
