Scavenger weapon concepts

I'm attempting to design a crossbow hybrid of sorts as the default weapon of my scavenging crew. I didn't want to go with something too similar to a gun, as I was leaning more in a fantasy direction than a sci-fi one, but I wanted something highly adaptable that could come in many shapes and sizes. I was originally considering designing it as more akin to a standard crossbow, but wasn't happy with how clunky it looked and how awkward the perspective was to draw. 

After some research, I discovered the existence of vertical crossbows, which are not only more lightweight and powerful than a regular crossbow, but much more satisfying to look at and draw.
